Recently, the project “R&D of ±525kV Long-Life, Environmentally Friendly Polypropylene Insulation Material for DC Applications,” led by Changshu Zhonglian Photoelectric New Materials Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Zhonglian Photoelectric”), was successfully approved under the 2025 Changshu Municipal Core Technology Tackling “Challenge‑Based Recruitment” program. The project aims to overcome critical technological bottlenecks in ultra‑high‑voltage DC cable insulation materials and strive for major breakthroughs in independent innovation within the high‑end cable materials sector.

Recently, the project “Research and Development of Long‑Life, Environmentally Friendly Polypropylene Insulation Material for ±525 kV DC Applications,” led by Changshu Zhonglian Photoelectric New Materials Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as “Zhonglian Photoelectric”), was successfully approved under the 2025 Changshu Municipal Core Technology Tackling Program’s “Challenge‑Based Recruitment” initiative. The project aims to overcome critical technological bottlenecks in ultra‑high‑voltage DC cable insulation materials and strives to achieve major breakthroughs in independent innovation within the high‑end cable materials sector.

As China’s “dual carbon” strategy continues to advance, long-distance, high-capacity HVDC transmission has become a critical component in building a new‑type power system. ±525 kV DC cables are essential equipment for integrating offshore wind power into the grid and interconnecting regional power networks, and the performance of their insulation material—polypropylene‑based DC insulation compound—directly determines the cable’s transmission efficiency, service life, and safety. The project has developed a “long‑life, environmentally friendly polypropylene insulation compound” that not only must withstand the extreme voltage of ±525 kV but also excels in environmental sustainability (halogen‑free flame retardancy) and longevity (with a target service life exceeding 40 years). The goal is to create a new material with fully independent intellectual property rights and comprehensive performance at an internationally leading level, thereby achieving import substitution for critical materials and ensuring the autonomous and controllable operation of China’s energy industry chain.

The project approval review process was rigorous and meticulous. In accordance with the “2025 Changshu City Science and Technology Tackling ‘Challenge‑Based Leadership’ Project Review Plan,” a review panel comprising leading domestic experts in cable insulation materials and financial specialists conducted a comprehensive assessment of the project. After hearing a detailed presentation from Zhonglian Photoelectric and conducting on-site inspections of the company’s R&D center, testing laboratory, and pilot production line, the expert panel highly commended the project’s innovative technical approach, the strength of its R&D team, and the company’s solid foundation for industrialization.

The successful approval and subsequent R&D of this project will strongly propel the new materials industry toward high-end, green development.
